The play
Trial Berd with a small team to unify coding-agent workflows, persistent projects, roles, and reusable skills.
Block, the fintech company behind Square and Cash App, just open-sourced a tool called Berd. It’s the desktop app their own teams use internally to manage AI coding agents like Claude Code, Codex and Goose, all from one place instead of juggling separate windows and logins for each.
Here’s what makes this worth noticing. This isn’t a side project from a hobbyist developer. It’s a real fintech company, one that processes serious money and has serious compliance requirements, showing the world exactly how it runs its internal AI agent operations. Berd lets you set up persistent projects, assign roles to different agents, give them specific skills, and keep distinct identities for each one. That’s a real operational setup, not a demo. The repo is active, with 91 contributors and a current version of 0.6.2, though Block isn’t accepting outside pull requests right now. They’re sharing the code, not asking for help building it.
Why should you care if you’re not writing software? Because this is a preview of where a lot of company operations are heading. Right now, most businesses that use AI tools have people bouncing between different apps and chat windows, copying context from one tool to another, losing track of what each agent is supposed to be doing. Block’s answer was to build one command post where all their agents live, with clear roles and persistent memory of what each project needs. That’s exactly the kind of setup we think about when we build out an AI command centre for a business, one place where your tools, your agents, and your context stay organized instead of scattered across ten tabs.
You probably won’t run Berd yourself. But the pattern behind it, one home base for your AI tools instead of ten separate logins, is worth stealing for your own operation.
