The play

Treat massive AI infrastructure financing as a capacity signal, but avoid commitments that depend on one provider's expansion continuing.

Broadcom is reportedly putting together a very large debt package with Blackstone and Apollo to fund custom AI chips that will be leased to Anthropic. The senior portion is said to be worth $60 billion to $70 billion, with the total financing potentially reaching $100 billion. It follows a $35 billion AI XPV deal announced in June.

The important point is who carries the risk. Anthropic appears to be getting access to major computing capacity without putting all that hardware debt directly on its own balance sheet. Investors fund the chips, Broadcom supplies them, and Anthropic leases the capacity it needs to train and run models. The exact structure and tranche sizes are still fluid, so the final numbers may change.

For business owners, this is another sign that the AI infrastructure race is moving into big-ticket financial engineering, not just model development. The leading AI firms need enormous amounts of compute, and specialist investors are increasingly willing to finance it as an asset-backed deal. That could help firms like Anthropic scale faster ahead of a possible IPO, while shifting some downside onto lenders and investors if demand, pricing, or technology changes.

This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, tracking not only new models but the infrastructure and capital commitments shaping what AI services will be available, and at what cost.
