The play

Compare AI vendors using consistent net revenue and growth definitions, rather than relying on headline run-rate rankings from third-party trackers.

Third-party trackers now put Anthropic’s annualised revenue run rate at $74.1 billion in July, compared with $41.3 billion for OpenAI. That is a $32.8 billion gap, and a meaningful lift from the roughly $65 billion Anthropic figure reported earlier this week.

Before treating that as a clean scorecard, there is an important caveat. These are run-rate estimates, not necessarily audited revenue figures, and OpenAI disputes the comparison. Its argument is that the trackers may be comparing gross revenue for one company with net revenue for the other, creating a difference of roughly $8 billion. The underlying numbers should be read as directional, not final.

The more useful signal is the growth rate. Anthropic reportedly grew 57.7% month over month, while OpenAI grew 65.2%. Anthropic is ahead on estimated revenue today, but OpenAI is growing faster. For business owners, this matters because the model market is unlikely to settle around one clear winner soon. Both suppliers have the scale to keep improving products, pricing, enterprise support, and distribution. Avoid building critical workflows around assumptions that one provider will always be cheaper, better, or more available.

Design your AI work so models can be tested and changed without rebuilding the whole process. This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, where usage, costs, quality, and vendor performance can be tracked in one place.
