Australia’s proposed AI rules are starting to look less like a policy ambition and more like a delivery plan. The Federal Government’s commitment to legislate “Australian Standards for AI” is expected to go to National Cabinet this month, with legislation anticipated in early 2027.

The scope matters for operating businesses. The proposed rules are expected to cover the energy and water use of data centres, a digital duty of care, and a framework for automated decision-making across federal agencies. Those are different issues, but they point in the same direction. AI is no longer being treated only as a software purchase or an innovation project. It is becoming a matter of operational responsibility, infrastructure demand, customer protection, and accountable decisions.

For mid-market firms in Australia and New Zealand, the practical risk is moving faster with AI agents than your controls can support. If an agent can access customer data, make recommendations, trigger workflows, or influence a decision, someone needs to be clear on what it can do, what it must not do, who reviews exceptions, and how its actions are recorded.

You do not need to wait for a 2027 law to get the basics in place. Map where AI is already being used, assign an owner for each use case, set access boundaries, and keep human review around decisions with financial, customer, or employment consequences.
