Laude Institute has open-sourced Headlong, a small bash-based framework for building agents that keep thinking and acting between your requests. You give an agent a name and personality. From there, it can develop its own interests, start projects, retain distilled experience through a mem system, and build reusable skills. It can also message you first through Slack or Telegram rather than waiting for a prompt.

That’s a different idea from giving an agent its own computer. A dedicated computer gives it somewhere to work. Headlong is aimed at giving it continuity, a record of what it has learned, work it believes is worth pursuing, and a way to bring something to your attention unprompted. The project reached Hacker News’ front page today, with 113 points and climbing, so it’s clearly catching developers’ attention.

For a business owner, the useful question isn’t whether you want an AI with a personality. It’s whether there are recurring jobs where a system should keep watch, remember context, and raise its hand when action is needed. Think competitor monitoring, operational exceptions, customer issues, or a weekly review that doesn’t need to be manually kicked off every time.

There’s still a big gap between an open-source experiment and something you’d trust across core business processes. But the direction matters. This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, where agents have clear responsibilities, retained context, and sensible boundaries around when they act or notify people.
