AWS has agreed to buy DuckLabs, the Amsterdam team behind DuckDB, an open-source analytics database used to query data directly on a laptop, server, or application without needing a large database setup. The deal is expected to close in early September. DuckDB itself will remain open source and move under an independent foundation, while its founders stay on to lead the team at AWS, according to AWS’s announcement.

For business owners, this matters because a lot of practical AI work depends less on the model and more on getting company data ready for it. Tools that support retrieval-augmented generation, where an AI searches your documents before answering, and agent workflows often need to clean, join, filter, and analyse data quickly before anything reaches the AI. DuckDB has become a popular way to do that without standing up expensive data infrastructure.

This acquisition is another sign that major cloud providers want to own more of that lightweight analytics layer. AWS customers may eventually see tighter DuckDB integration across its data and AI services, though AWS has not announced specific product changes here. The more important takeaway is to keep your data foundations portable. Don’t build an AI process that only works inside one vendor’s stack if you can avoid it.
