A post arguing that retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG, is often overbuilt reached the top of Hacker News with 376 points and 165 comments. Its central point is simple. Many teams reach first for embeddings and vector databases when they want an AI system to search company information. But for a large share of use cases, ordinary full-text search, paired with an LLM that rewrites a user’s question into a better search query, may do the job at far lower cost and with less technical overhead.

That does not mean vector search is useless. It can be valuable when wording varies heavily, documents are poorly structured, or the task genuinely depends on meaning rather than keywords. The pushback in the comments shows there is no single answer. But the broader lesson for operators is sound. Don’t buy or build a complex retrieval stack because it sounds like the standard AI architecture. Start with the question your staff or customers need answered, test basic search first, and measure whether the answers are actually useful. If simple search misses too much, then add complexity with a clear reason.
