The play

Reduce single-provider dependency by adding fallbacks, portability plans, and contract protections against access termination.

OpenAI says it will end Cursor’s access to its models on November 12, two weeks after SpaceX completed its roughly $60 billion acquisition of Anysphere, the company behind Cursor. Its stated reason is unusual. OpenAI says it cannot trust Elon Musk to honour the contract terms, pointing to his past restrictions on Twitter data access after buying the platform, and alleged use of rival AI outputs in training Grok.

For Cursor customers, this is not just corporate drama. Cursor is a product many software teams use every day, and model access sits underneath a large part of what it can do. Anthropic moved quickly. Co-founder Tom Brown publicly invited Cursor users over and said Anthropic would expand Claude compute within Cursor to cover the capacity gap.

The bigger issue is supplier concentration. A company can build a useful product on top of one AI provider, then find that access affected by a dispute, an acquisition, changed commercial terms, or a strategic conflict well outside its control. This appears to be the first public case of a frontier AI lab using model supply as pressure against an acquisition target.

If AI is becoming part of how your team sells, supports customers, writes code, or runs operations, you need a fallback plan. That means knowing which workflows depend on which provider, where your data goes, and what happens if a model is removed or becomes too expensive. This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, so leaders can see dependencies before they become an operational problem.
