A study claims Google AI Mode shows shoppers the same products at prices averaging 21.6% higher than regular Search

Tracked across 2M+ listings over 23 days, Google hasn't verified the methodology. Looks like an artifact of AI Mode's ranking algorithm not weighting.

A study claims Google AI Mode shows shoppers the same products at prices averaging 21.6% higher than regular Search

AI Pulse · Frontier Labs Watch

A study tracking more than 2 million product listings over 23 days claims Google’s AI Mode showed shoppers products priced, on average, 21.6% higher than what regular Google Search returned. Google has not verified the study’s methodology, so treat the number as a claim, not a settled fact.

Still, the underlying issue is worth watching. AI Mode may be ranking products based on what it believes is the best overall answer, rather than giving the lowest price much weight. That can mean a shopper asking a simple question like “best price for this laptop” gets a polished recommendation that costs more than the alternatives available through standard search.

For retailers, this creates a new visibility problem. Being competitively priced may not be enough if AI-driven shopping results favour certain product pages, merchants, brands, reviews, availability signals, or listing quality. For buyers, it is a reminder that an AI shopping assistant is not automatically a neutral price comparison tool.

Google is pushing AI Mode as a commerce surface, so how it chooses products will matter to anyone selling online. This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, tracking where AI systems are shaping customer decisions and where the business needs a human check.
