The play
Prototype a self-hosted PII gateway for sensitive Omni requests, with reversible vault controls, audit logs, and clear data-retention policies.
A small open-source project called Mask Gate is drawing attention in developer circles around a problem many businesses still handle too casually, sending sensitive customer data straight into public AI tools.
The idea is simple. Before a request reaches ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, Mask Gate detects and replaces personal data such as passport numbers, tax IDs and payment card details. It stores the original values in a reversible vault, so authorised systems can restore them later if needed. The project is also framed as a self-hosted option for organisations dealing with Russian compliance requirements. Its GitHub repository has been gaining around 41 stars a day, according to the project page.
The broader lesson matters more than the tool itself. Staff will use AI for support replies, sales research, document summaries and analysis. If they paste real customer or employee data into those prompts, your company has created a data-handling risk before anyone has reviewed the output. A masking layer gives you a practical control point. It can remove sensitive fields before data leaves your environment, while preserving enough context for the AI to remain useful.
This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, not as a technical extra, but as part of making AI safe enough for everyday business work.
