The play
Run a limited design pilot and compare output against existing CAD workflows before changing core tooling.
Formas has launched Cartesian, an AI 3D modelling product aimed at design work. The early conversation is active, with the launch drawing 60 points and 56 comments on Hacker News. Most of the discussion is about where it fits alongside established CAD tools, rather than clear proof that it replaces them. You can see the product positioning in Formas’ launch material.
For a business owner, the important question is not whether an AI tool can produce a 3D model. It is whether it can shorten the path from an idea to something your design, engineering, sales, or production team can actually use. Existing CAD systems sit deep inside many workflows. They carry years of design standards, file formats, approvals, supplier requirements, and staff training. A new AI layer has to work with that reality, not just create impressive demos.
There is no pricing or revenue information disclosed yet, so it is too early to judge the commercial model or customer traction. Still, this is a useful signal to watch. AI businesses that enter established software categories often win by owning a narrow, expensive part of the workflow first. This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, tracking where new tools may save time while separating real operational fit from early launch noise.
