The play
Set procurement rules requiring disclosure and human review when AI agents recommend vendors, products, or services influenced by sponsored placement.
OpenAI has introduced a new advertising format called Sponsored Agents. Rather than placing a banner beside a chat, these sponsored agents can appear and take actions within a ChatGPT conversation. That moves advertising closer to the point where a user is researching, comparing options, or asking an AI to complete a task.
According to OpenAI’s announcement, the format expands where advertising can show up in ChatGPT. The key business issue is trust. If an agent recommends a supplier, product, or service, users will want to know whether that recommendation is based on fit, sponsorship, or both. The announcement has already prompted active discussion on Hacker News, with debate focused on those trust implications.
For operators, this is worth watching because AI assistants are becoming part of how people discover and choose vendors. Your future customer may not start with a Google search or visit your website first. They may ask an agent to shortlist options, explain trade-offs, or take the next step for them. That raises a practical question: can your business clearly explain what it does, who it serves, and where it is the right fit when an AI is doing the filtering?
This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, tracking new AI channels alongside the trust, governance, and customer experience decisions they create.
