The play
Test AI forecasting against your experts on measurable decisions, keeping human review where assumptions, accountability, or context matter.
A report in The Economist says AI systems are now outperforming some of the best human forecasters on prediction tasks. That does not mean an AI can run your business or see the future. It does mean that, in structured situations where people must weigh evidence and estimate what is likely to happen next, AI judgment may be becoming more reliable than expert intuition. You can read the original report.
For business owners, the practical question is where forecasts already shape decisions. Sales pipeline probabilities, demand planning, inventory levels, customer churn, staffing needs, project risk and cash flow assumptions all involve a view of the future. Most companies still rely on a mix of spreadsheets, historic averages and the strongest voice in the room. AI can become a second opinion that tests those assumptions, spots signals people miss and makes the uncertainty visible.
The important word is “second.” A prediction is not a decision. Your team still needs to understand the inputs, set the guardrails and decide what action makes commercial sense. But if AI is beating elite forecasters in some settings, it is worth asking whether your forecasting process is being measured against reality often enough.
This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, where operational data, forecasts and management decisions can sit in one place.
