The play
Plan against capability competition rather than public slowdown promises, keeping budgets flexible for faster model releases.
The public conversation about slowing AI development is getting harder to take at face value. Days after backing Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s call for a slower pace, Sam Altman and Elon Musk reportedly teased upcoming powerful models. As the original report puts it, the gap between the public message and the product signals appeared within days.
For business owners, the important point is not to get caught up in the personalities. It’s that the major AI labs may keep moving quickly even while their leaders argue for caution. That means the tools available to your team can change fast, and the claims made around safety, timing and capability may not always line up neatly.
Don’t build your plans around any one lab’s public position. Build around practical questions instead: which AI tools are reliable enough for your work, where human review is required, what data can be used, and how you’ll respond when a new model changes the cost or quality of a task. This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, giving leaders a clear view of where AI is being used and what needs attention.
The slowdown debate matters, but so does operational reality. The companies that win won’t be those predicting every model release. They’ll be the ones with enough governance and flexibility to act when the next release arrives.
