The play
Treat WhatsApp as a contested agent channel, and test whether its native tools reduce integration costs for SMB customer operations.
Meta has reportedly opened WhatsApp Business tools to AI agents, a move that could put more AI-assisted customer conversations inside the messaging channel many small businesses already use. According to the original report, Meta is positioning this capability against commerce-focused AI tools connected to OpenAI and Anthropic models.
For an owner, the important point is not which model wins. It’s where customer work happens. If AI agents can operate through WhatsApp Business, businesses may be able to handle more routine customer conversations in the same place customers already send enquiries. That could include guiding people through common questions, helping them find the right product or moving a conversation towards a purchase, depending on how Meta makes the tools available and what controls it provides.
This is still a reported development, so don’t plan around it as if it is a finished product. But it is a useful signal. The competition is moving beyond standalone chatbots and into the business systems where sales and service teams already spend their day. Companies that have clear product information, good customer FAQs and defined handover rules will be better placed when these agent tools become practical.
This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, connecting AI activity to the channels and workflows that matter to the business.
