The play
Prototype one WhatsApp customer-service workflow, such as appointment changes, with approval limits and escalation to staff.
Meta is giving AI agents direct access to WhatsApp Business tools, which could allow an agent to act on a company’s behalf within WhatsApp customer workflows. Think handling routine customer operations in the same channel where many small businesses already receive enquiries, answer questions, and manage conversations.
The important point is not that every WhatsApp interaction should be automated. It is that AI agents may now have a more direct path into a business’s existing customer channel, rather than sitting outside it as a separate chatbot or internal tool. For an operator, that creates a practical test case. Which incoming messages are repetitive enough for an agent to handle? Which need a human response? Where should the agent gather information, draft a reply, or move a request to the right person?
The announcement is still best viewed as an early operational opportunity, not a promise of fully hands-off customer service. Businesses will need to be clear about what an agent can do, what it cannot do, and how staff step in when a conversation becomes sensitive or complex. But for companies already running customer operations through WhatsApp, this is a meaningful direction of travel. The original report outlines the move.
This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, connecting agents to real business workflows while keeping visibility and human control in place.
