The play

As agent tools mature, require a sandbox for code execution and test its policies against real workflows before granting agents access to production systems.

Microsoft has made Microsoft Execution Containers generally available. The tool lets developers and IT teams set rules for what an AI agent can access, such as particular files and network destinations. Microsoft says those rules are enforced while the agent runs, outside the agent’s control, so it can’t grant itself more access.

That matters because an agent may try to take an action that helps finish a task but goes beyond what its operator intended. Microsoft’s example is a coding agent that can read a production server’s configuration but shouldn’t be able to change it. A container can allow the first action and block the second. It doesn’t remove the need to decide what access an agent needs, but it gives teams a way to enforce those limits. Microsoft’s announcement describes several containment options, with different levels of isolation and platform availability.

For a business, the practical question is which files, tools, and connections an agent needs for a specific job, and which it should never touch. Teams should bring oversight and rules together when deciding what agents can access.
