Include software fees in GPU cost forecasts, but treat the reported $2,000 figure as unconfirmed until Nvidia clarifies its proposal.
Nvidia is discussing an annual software fee of about $2,000 per GPU for software that runs agents on AI infrastructure, according to Tom’s Hardware. The report says Nvidia hasn’t clarified which software the fee would cover, how it relates to existing products, or when it might take effect. So don’t treat $2,000 as a confirmed price or a settled offer.
For a business planning to run agents on Nvidia infrastructure, the number is still a useful reference point for thinking about software costs alongside GPU costs. But the comparison with Nvidia AI Enterprise, listed at $4,500 per GPU for a year, doesn’t tell us whether the products or licensing terms are comparable. The practical question for an operator is what’s included, and whether the fee would apply to each GPU or only to a defined set of software and services. This is the kind of cost and product detail we build into an AI command centre, so teams can track what’s proposed and what’s confirmed.
The business-model signal is worth watching: Nvidia is discussing software licensing as part of its AI infrastructure offering, not just GPU sales. For now, though, the report doesn’t establish the proposal’s status or how customers would be charged. Treat the figure as a planning scenario, not a line item to put in next year’s budget.
