Anthropic shipped Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 on September 1, 2026, making incremental but meaningful improvements to the models it launched in June. The headline change: the same performance at 25% lower compute cost for most customers. Pricing stays fixed at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, but the efficiency improvements mean businesses running high-volume workloads will spend less for the same output.
Both models retain the 1-million-token context window from Fable 5 and Mythos 5, which remains the longest among frontier models and the practical reason enterprises use them for large-scale document analysis, code review across entire codebases, and extended research sessions.
What Actually Changed
Fable 5.1 is available now through the Claude API. Mythos 5.1, the model with relaxed safety filters, remains restricted to vetted Project Glasswing participants in cybersecurity and life sciences research.
The two models are architecturally the same. The difference is which requests each one will handle. Fable 5.1 declines or redirects queries that touch on cyberattacks or dangerous biology. Mythos 5.1 permits those queries for organisations that have been vetted and cleared by Anthropic. It is not publicly accessible.
Anthropic framed the update around making high-volume use cases more economically viable rather than adding headline capabilities. For teams already running Fable 5 in production, the case for upgrading is simple arithmetic: the same workflows cost less.
What This Means for Business
The efficiency improvement matters more than it might appear on the surface. Most businesses that deployed AI at scale in the past 12 months have discovered that the economics of running large models at volume become the primary constraint faster than the capabilities do.
A 25% reduction in compute cost on a model at this capability level changes the ROI calculation for several categories of use:
Customer operations at scale. Teams running Claude for high-volume customer communication, support triage, and document processing will see meaningful cost reductions without changing their stack.
Knowledge work automation. Finance, legal, and consulting teams using the 1M-token window to process large document sets (contracts, regulations, financial filings) now have a cheaper path to doing that continuously rather than selectively.
Multi-agent workflows. As businesses run more orchestrated agent pipelines where one model calls another, per-call cost compounds across the chain. A 25% reduction at each step adds up faster than it looks in a flat-rate comparison.
Research and development. Teams using Claude for code generation, review, and refactoring at production scale will see direct savings on what is often one of the fastest-growing line items in their infrastructure budget.
Mythos 5.1 and the Glasswing Track
The Mythos track reflects a deliberate product decision by Anthropic: rather than building two entirely different models, they ship one base model and apply different safety layers depending on who is using it and what they have agreed to.
Project Glasswing, which gates access to Mythos, has grown to more than 150 organisations including NATO and the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA). The expansion to 5.1 does not change the access model but does give those organisations the same performance and efficiency improvements arriving in the public Fable release.
For most businesses, Mythos 5.1 is not relevant. The organisations that need it already know they do.
The Broader Picture
Anthropic’s trajectory in 2026 has been consistent: release capable frontier models, iterate quickly on efficiency, and tighten the enterprise access model. The company filed for an IPO confidentially in June, reached a $65 billion funding round, and is now running at a reported valuation approaching $965 billion.
The pace of iteration (Fable 5 in June, Fable 5.1 in September) mirrors what OpenAI and Google have done with their model families: rapid point releases that sharpen economics and reliability rather than waiting for a full generational leap.
