Anthropic launched Claude Opus 5 on July 24, 2026, positioning it as the practical middle ground between its flagship Fable 5 and the outgoing Opus 4.8. The pitch is straightforward: near-frontier intelligence at the cost enterprises already pay for a model that Opus 5 now significantly outperforms.

For businesses that have been watching AI model releases and wondering when the cost-to-capability curve would improve meaningfully, Opus 5 is a direct answer.

What Changed

Opus 5 is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens, matching what Anthropic charged for Opus 4.8. The performance delta between those two prices is substantial. On Frontier-Bench v0.1, a benchmark suite covering agentic coding, reasoning, and long-horizon knowledge tasks, Opus 5 achieved state-of-the-art results and more than doubled Opus 4.8’s scores at lower cost per task.

The model comes with a 1-million-token context window, meaning it can process an entire codebase, a year of financial records, or an extensive regulatory document in a single pass without chunking or retrieval workarounds.

A new reasoning effort control lets developers set the depth of thinking per request. The three settings, low, medium, and high, let you trade latency and cost for intelligence on a request-by-request basis. A customer triage routing task runs on low; a contract risk analysis runs on high. You pay for what you actually need.

For teams where throughput matters more than latency, Anthropic also offers Fast Mode at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. That runs approximately 2.5 times faster than the standard tier, useful for real-time voice pipelines, interactive workflows, or high-volume batch processing that can absorb the additional cost.

Agentic Performance Is the Real Story

The improvements that matter most for enterprise deployments are in how Opus 5 handles sustained, multi-step work.

Prior Opus generations were good at answering questions and drafting content. Opus 5 was built with agentic tasks as the primary design target: running code, using computer tools, executing long-horizon plans, and handling the kind of work that requires dozens or hundreds of model calls to complete. The result is a model that works substantially better inside automated pipelines and AI agent systems, not just as a chatbot responding to prompts.

That is a meaningful shift for businesses that have moved past proof-of-concept and are building real operational systems around AI. The bottleneck in those environments is often model reliability over long task sequences, not single-response quality. Opus 5 addresses that directly.

As of July 24, Opus 5 is the default model on Claude Max and the strongest model available on Claude Pro. In the API, it’s accessible as claude-opus-5.

For context, the Claude model family now spans several distinct tiers. Fable 5 remains the frontier model for teams that need the highest possible capability and can absorb premium pricing. Opus 5 targets teams that need strong performance for production workloads at manageable cost. Sonnet and Haiku serve lower-latency, cost-sensitive applications.

What This Means for Business

Three things shift for enterprise buyers with Opus 5’s arrival.

The cost barrier to capable agents just came down. Prior to Opus 5, running a sophisticated AI agent that needed real reasoning and multi-step task completion meant paying frontier model prices. Opus 5 delivers close to Fable 5 performance on most tasks at the same price as the predecessor model that it substantially outperforms. Businesses that priced out frontier-grade agents and settled for less capable alternatives should re-run those numbers.

The reasoning control adds deployment flexibility. Setting reasoning effort per request is a practical feature that large-scale deployments will use constantly. A pipeline that runs thousands of requests a day can now calibrate each call to the actual complexity of the task, rather than paying for maximum reasoning everywhere or accepting minimum reasoning to control costs.

Agentic AI gets more reliable in production. The agent-focused design of Opus 5 reflects where enterprise AI spending is going. Businesses deploying AI to handle real work, not just assist with it, need models that stay on task across long sequences. Opus 5’s improvements in that area reduce the failure modes that have made some teams reluctant to move beyond supervised, single-turn applications.
