How to choose

How to choose a Employment Hero alternative

  1. 1

    What drives the monthly bill?

Employment Hero charges per user, with a 10-user minimum, and add-ons can add another monthly cost per employee. Check how your bill changes as your team grows, which functions need a higher tier, and whether optional services are included or charged separately.

  2. 2

    Who controls your records?

Ask what you can take with you if you leave. Employment Hero provides an employee import template, while signatures, workflows and settings stay behind. With HR for Claude Code, your records sit in a database you own, rather than being held only in a software provider's system.

  3. 3

Can it match your way of working?

List the fields, checks and steps your HR process depends on before choosing. Your version can be built around how your business runs, while the free version checks employment records against NZ and Australian rules and names each rule's source. Confirm the details you need are represented.

  4. 4

    What does switching involve?

Plan the move by separating employee details from documents and processes. Employment Hero's import template can include current and terminated employees, but agreements, policies, tickets and reviews need to come from your files or be moved as part of the switch. Payroll stays in its existing system.

Questions

Employment Hero alternatives, answered

How much do Employment Hero alternatives cost? expand_more

Employment Hero lists HR Essentials at $10 and HR Engage at $14 per user on its Australian pricing page, with a 10-user minimum. HR Elite and the tier with payroll are quoted privately. Enterprise DNA charges one setup fee, then a monthly retainer, rather than charging per employee.

Can I bring our employee information with us? expand_more

Employment Hero lets you download an employee import template that can include current and terminated staff. The free version checks the rows before saving. Enterprise DNA brings your Employment Hero data across for your version, including other records from your files as part of the switch.

Would we need to change payroll too? expand_more

No. Pay runs, tax, KiwiSaver, super and returns to Inland Revenue and the ATO stay in your payroll system, such as Xero, MYOB or KeyPay. If Employment Hero runs payroll for you today, moving payroll is a separate step to plan.

Can staff still request leave and read policies? expand_more

In the free version, staff ask their manager or the office, and the request is recorded and decided in one step. If you want staff to request leave, read policies and update their own details from a phone, Enterprise DNA can build that self-service page into your version.
