The play

The median business spends $11 per employee per month on AI, cite this in discovery to frame how far behind most prospects are and justify your retainer as a capability leap.

The gap between companies that have committed to AI and everyone else is now a chasm. New data from Ramp, aggregated across more than 70,000 US businesses, shows the top 1% of AI spenders are putting roughly $7,500 per employee per month into AI tools and compute. The top 10% average $611 per employee per month. The median firm? $11.38 per employee per month, which is about one subscription seat.

That’s not a rounding error. It’s a 650x difference between the leaders and the middle of the pack. And the top decile is still accelerating, with spend up 14.1% in a single month.

Most businesses sit at the $11 end. They’ve bought a ChatGPT Team seat or a Copilot licence, maybe rolled it out to a few people, and called it a day. They have no internal capability, no workflows, no measurement, no strategy. Meanwhile, the top tier is building entire operating systems around AI, automating processes end to end, and compounding advantage every quarter.

The question isn’t whether your competitors are using AI. It’s whether they’re in the top 10% or the median. If you’re still at one seat per person, you’re not competing with the leaders. You’re not even in the same game. This is the kind of structural shift that separates into an AI command centre, where every process, every workflow, and every decision point gets rebuilt around intelligent automation, not bolted on as an afterthought.

The gap will keep widening. The firms spending $600+ per employee aren’t just buying software. They’re buying speed, margin, and the ability to do things manually-run businesses can’t match. If you’re still at $11 per head, the clock is ticking.
