A single Go binary tries to force "senior-dev discipline" onto coding agents as a commit gate

The play

Add commit gates that require tests and permanent fixes for escaped bugs before coding agents can mark work complete.

Most coding agents can write code quickly. The harder question is whether they’ve actually finished the job. A new open-source tool called procoder is built around that gap. It combines three earlier community tools into one dependency-free Go binary that sits in front of a commit.

Its rule is simple. An agent can’t mark work as done if verification is incomplete. And if a bug escapes into the codebase, the fix must leave something permanent behind, such as a new lint rule or a pinned test, before the agent can close the issue. That’s closer to the discipline you’d expect from a strong senior developer than a typical “run the tests and ship it” workflow.

The project is growing steadily, with 139 GitHub stars and roughly 21 added per day, rather than through a viral burst. That matters because it points to a broader realisation among open-source builders: agents can produce work, but they shouldn’t be trusted to certify their own work. Businesses putting coding agents into production will need controls that check evidence, enforce standards, and make recurring mistakes less likely.

This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, where AI activity is managed with clear checks instead of blind trust.
