A new open-source project called Sentio is tackling a small but important gap in agent workflows, giving AI agents real email inboxes rather than simulated ones.
Sentio is a multi-tenant mail server written in Rust. It supports the parts of email that matter when you move beyond a demo, including SMTP delivery, DKIM, SPF, DMARC, ARC, MTA-STS and DANE. It also keeps tenants isolated. Incoming email is delivered to an agent as structured webhook JSON, and the agent can send an in-thread reply through a REST interface.
That means an agent could receive a customer request, supplier update or internal approval by email, understand the message, take an allowed action, and reply from its own address in the same thread. The key point is not that AI can write emails. It already can. The shift is that email identity, deliverability and security controls are starting to be treated as core infrastructure for agents.
Sentio is only two days old, though it is attracting early attention at roughly 103 GitHub stars per day. So this is not a recommendation to deploy it in your business tomorrow. It is a useful signal of where the plumbing is heading. If your team is planning AI assistants that interact with customers or vendors, email will need proper guardrails, clear ownership and an audit trail, not a shared mailbox and a basic automation.
