The play

Review youth-facing product defaults now, documenting age controls, usage limits, and parent oversight for likely regulatory scrutiny.

Meta has agreed to settle claims from 48 states that Instagram and Facebook harmed minors. The proposed product changes are concrete: a two-hour daily cap for users under 18, which parents can override, hidden like counts on minors’ posts, nighttime blocks, and a ban on extreme makeup filters.

The financial structure matters as much as the features. Meta would pay 70% of the total settlement amount unless TikTok and YouTube agree to pay a combined $5.3 billion and adopt matching limits. In plain terms, this is not just a settlement with Meta. It’s an attempt to make the same rules apply across the biggest youth-facing platforms. State attorneys general are using one company’s case to establish a template for the wider market.

If you run a company that puts AI into customer-facing products, especially tools used by younger people, pay attention. The next question for regulators may be whether consumer AI chat products need similar safeguards around time limits, late-night access, appearance-related features, and harmful interactions. These requirements can quickly become product, legal, support, and reporting work, not just a policy update.

This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, tracking external risks early so product and operating teams can respond before a rule or settlement forces their hand.
