The play

Review AI vendor policies and government exposure when selecting providers for regulated or public-sector work.

A federal judge has now ended Anthropic’s fight with the Pentagon over a “supply chain risk” designation. Judge Rita Lin issued a final ruling that the Department of Defense acted unlawfully, finding the designation was First Amendment retaliation and that Anthropic was denied due process. The court ordered a permanent injunction, not a temporary pause while the case continues.

In plain terms, the Pentagon cannot use a supply chain security label as punishment for an AI company’s usage policies or public positions. That matters because these labels can carry serious commercial consequences. Government agencies and contractors often take their cue from Defense Department decisions, so a designation like this could affect who is willing or able to buy from a vendor.

For business owners, this is a useful signal about the maturing AI market. Your AI suppliers will have their own policies around permitted uses, data handling, and government work. Those policies may create tension with customers or regulators, but this ruling puts a boundary around how far government can go when it disagrees with a vendor. It also makes vendor governance more important. You need to know which models and providers sit inside critical workflows, what their terms allow, and what would happen if access or government approval became contested.

This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, giving leaders a practical view of the external dependencies behind their AI operations.
