Document training-data provenance, licensing obligations, and indemnities before building products on generative AI services.

Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell have filed a new lawsuit against Anthropic in California federal court, alleging the company copied tens of thousands of songs from Library Genesis to train Claude. The suit also names Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and co-founder Ben Mann personally.

The publishers are seeking up to $150,000 for each allegedly infringed composition. That does not mean Anthropic will owe that amount, or that the allegations have been proven. It does show how much financial exposure can build when training data is unclear. This is also a notable shift in the wider copyright fight around generative AI. Until now, many of the highest-profile cases have involved authors and book publishers. Major music publishers entering the fray raises the stakes for companies building, buying, or embedding AI tools that work with creative content.

For business owners, the practical question is not whether to stop using AI. It is whether your suppliers can clearly explain where their models and data come from, what rights they have, and who carries the risk if a dispute lands. If you use AI to create marketing, training material, product content, or customer-facing media, keep records of the tools used and the terms attached to them.

This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, tracking material AI risks alongside the systems your team is actually using.
