Cloudflare has released Wallets and cloudflare.pay, giving AI agents a way to hold a stablecoin wallet, receive a permanent payment ID, and make tightly controlled payments. A human-controlled account sets the rules, including spending caps and a list of approved merchants. The agent can operate within those boundaries without getting unrestricted access to company funds.

This matters because it turns a messy commercial question into a piece of standard plumbing. If an agent needs to pay for a data lookup, an API call, or another digital service, the payment can be attached to that specific action. Cloudflare has connected this to its Monetization Gateway, which uses Coinbase’s x402 protocol. More than 20 companies are already participating.

For operators, the bigger shift is not crypto speculation. It is the potential for software costs to move from subscriptions and bundled usage into small, traceable charges per agent action. That could make it easier to test agent-led workflows without committing to large contracts, but it also creates a new cost-control job. You will need clear limits, approved vendors, and reporting that shows what each agent is buying and why.
