The play

Explore outcome-based pricing for automation, tying fees to measurable savings or completed work rather than user seats.

Cognition, the company behind coding agent Devin, is reportedly discussing a new funding round at a $40 billion valuation. The talks are still developing and no deal has closed. What stands out is the reported revenue run-rate: $1 billion in annual recurring revenue, up from $492 million in May. That suggests revenue close to doubled in roughly one quarter, only a few months after Cognition’s last $1 billion round at a $26 billion valuation.

The important detail for operators is how the product is priced. Devin is described as outcome-priced rather than seat-priced. A seat-priced tool charges for each user, like most software subscriptions. Outcome pricing ties spend more closely to work completed. If that model is gaining traction, buyers may be treating AI coding agents less like another tool for developers and more like a way to purchase completed engineering output.

That changes the conversation inside a business. The question is no longer just, “How many licences do we need?” It becomes, “Which defined tasks can we hand to an agent, what quality checks are needed, and what is the cost per completed result?” Companies that can measure those answers will be in a better position to use agents responsibly and negotiate from evidence rather than excitement.

This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, tracking where AI is moving from experimental software spend toward measurable operational outcomes.
