The play
Map checkout, catalog, and inventory workflows, then pilot agent handoffs with explicit approval and payment boundaries.
Anthropic has launched Claude Commerce Agents, working with Shopify, Visa, Mastercard, and Accenture. The practical part is a set of reference blueprints for two types of AI agent.
Shopper agents can help customers find products, build a cart, and move through checkout. Merchant agents are aimed at the operational side, including catalog search, inventory work, and sales operations. These are blueprints rather than a finished commerce system you simply switch on. Businesses can deploy them through the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Microsoft Foundry, or Google Vertex.
For an owner, this matters because commerce AI is moving beyond website chatbots that answer basic questions. The next layer is software that can take part in a transaction workflow, while connecting to the product, stock, and payment information that sits behind it. That can create useful options, but it also raises practical questions around who approves actions, what data the agent can access, and where a human needs to stay in control.
The sensible starting point is not to hand checkout or inventory decisions to an agent. Pick one narrow workflow, such as improving product discovery or helping staff search a catalogue, then measure whether it reduces effort or improves conversion. This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, where agents, business data, permissions, and oversight sit in one operating view.
