The play
Maintain fallback coding tools for critical delivery work because embedded Claude still inherits Anthropic's outage risk.
Microsoft has confirmed general availability of Claude Fable 5.1 in VS Code through GitHub Copilot. For operators, the important point is not just another model option in a developer tool. It is where the model is being sold and used.
Anthropic is continuing to put Claude into platforms customers already own and rely on, rather than asking every buyer to adopt a separate API workflow or another standalone software seat. That can make adoption easier. Your developers stay in VS Code and GitHub Copilot, while gaining access to a different model for coding work.
But the timing matters. Anthropic’s infrastructure went down on the same day the capability became generally available. Even when AI appears inside your existing tool of record, part of the service still depends on the model provider behind it. GitHub Copilot may be the interface your team sees, but Anthropic’s uptime can still affect whether Claude is available when work needs to get done.
That is a practical procurement and operating issue. Don’t assess AI tools only on model quality or how neatly they fit into existing software. Ask what happens during a provider outage, whether teams can switch models, and which work stops if one supplier is unavailable.
This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, giving leaders visibility over the tools, providers, dependencies, and fallback options behind everyday AI use.
