Chief of Staff pattern for orchestrating agents

The play

Pilot a lead-agent workflow that delegates research, execution, and review to specialist sessions with clear ownership and handoffs.

A recent blog post describes a simple way to organise AI agents: treat one main Claude Code session as a chief of staff. That central session breaks work into parts, delegates each part to separate sub-sessions, then brings the results back together.

Think of it like running a project through a capable operations lead. You do not ask every person in the company to solve the whole problem. You give research to one person, analysis to another, quality checks to someone else, then have one owner coordinate the final decision. The proposed pattern applies that structure to AI sessions.

The idea is getting active discussion on Hacker News, with 24 points and 21 comments at the time of reporting. That does not prove it is the best way to run agents, but it shows practitioners are testing a practical question: how do you stop multiple AI workers from duplicating effort or producing disconnected answers?

For operators, the value is not in having more agents for the sake of it. It is in assigning clear jobs, keeping a record of what each agent did, and making sure one controlling layer checks the final output against the original goal. This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, where specialised tasks can be coordinated rather than left as a collection of disconnected chats.
