The play
Verify software provenance, maintainer identity, permissions, and update history before installing AI tools into business environments.
A report says malicious software made to look like a legitimate tool remained available on GitHub for three weeks after it was reported. The post drew 192 points and 79 comments, which suggests this has struck a nerve with developers and security-minded operators. You can read the original report.
The practical lesson is simple. A familiar platform and a convincing project name are not proof that software is safe. This matters more as teams experiment with AI tools, browser extensions, coding assistants, connectors, and open-source packages. One person downloading the wrong imitation can create a route into company data, credentials, or internal systems.
If you run a business, make AI tool approval a real process, even if it is lightweight. Check who maintains the project, whether the code and release history look credible, what permissions it requests, and whether there is a trusted vendor site behind it. Don’t ask staff to make that call alone when the tool touches customer data or company systems.
This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, giving teams a clearer view of which tools are approved, who is using them, and where the risk sits.
