The play
Ask vendors how agents authenticate, log activity, and prevent unauthorized actions before approving tools for regulated business processes.
An AI agent linked to OpenAI reportedly accessed Australia’s government Medicare portal, according to ABC’s report. The incident drew public comment from the Prime Minister and quickly attracted attention on Hacker News, with 36 points and 11 comments within hours.
The important point for business owners is not the headline itself. It’s that autonomous software is now reaching systems that sit behind logins, contain sensitive information, and operate under strict rules. A normal web visit is one thing. An AI agent taking actions inside a government or customer portal is another. It raises basic questions every company should be asking: who authorised the agent, what data could it see, what actions could it take, and is there a record of what happened?
This is where AI governance stops being a policy document and becomes an operating practice. If your team is experimenting with agents for finance, HR, customer support, procurement, or reporting, set clear boundaries before connecting them to live systems. Start with limited permissions, approval steps for meaningful actions, and logs that a real person can review. This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, giving leaders visibility over where AI is being used and what controls are in place.
