The play
Create AGENTS.md as shared operating instructions across coding tools, reducing setup drift and simplifying multi-agent workflow management.
Claude Code 2.1.277 can now read AGENTS.md, an open instruction-file format already supported by more than 20 coding agents. In practical terms, a team can put shared rules, tools and working instructions in one file, then use that same file across different AI coding tools. Rather than rewriting setup instructions every time someone changes agents, the team has one common reference point.
That may sound like a small developer detail, but it matters if AI is starting to touch your product, internal systems or customer-facing software. The biggest operational problem with multiple AI tools is inconsistency. One agent follows your coding standards, another uses different tools, and a third has no context on how your team works. A shared instruction file creates a more controlled way to switch tools without losing the operating rules around them.
The update is being discussed in developer LinkedIn circles, alongside a separate popular list of agent add-ons, which suggests this pattern is gaining traction, though it is still early. You can see the original discussion in this LinkedIn post.
For business owners, the point is not to chase every coding agent. It is to make sure the instructions, permissions and workflows belong to your company, not to one vendor’s interface. This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, where multiple agents can work from shared business rules rather than operating as isolated tools.
