Cognition, the company behind the AI coding tool Devin, is reportedly in talks to raise money at a valuation over $40 billion. That’s up 50% from where it stood less than three months ago. Nothing is signed yet, this is still “in talks,” but the numbers behind the talk are worth paying attention to.

Founder Scott Wu says annualized revenue is closing in on $1 billion, roughly double the $492 million the company disclosed back in May. He’s also pointing to six straight months of 50% month over month growth in enterprise usage. Customers named include Goldman Sachs, Mercedes-Benz, and US government agencies, according to the original report. Big, serious buyers, not just startups experimenting on the side.

Here’s why this matters if you run a business that isn’t in software at all. When a company can double revenue in three months by selling AI that writes and manages code, it tells you enterprise buyers are done treating AI coding tools as a novelty. Goldman Sachs and government agencies don’t sign checks for things they’re not planning to depend on. If your business has any software, internal tools, or custom systems, the cost of building and maintaining that work is about to shift, probably down, and the speed of building it is about to shift up.

The practical takeaway isn’t “go buy Devin.” It’s that the gap between companies using AI to build and fix their own systems fast, and companies still doing it the slow manual way, is widening every quarter.
