The play
Package AI features as paid workflow improvements for existing customers, rather than forcing a replacement of your core product.
DocuSign is showing what a credible AI upsell can look like inside an established software business. Its Intelligent Agreement Management platform, an AI-native layer added to its long-standing e-signature product, rose from 12.6% to 15.1% of annual recurring revenue in one quarter. The company now expects it to reach 18% to 19% of ARR by the end of its fiscal year.
That matters because DocuSign did not need to discard its core product or persuade customers to move to an entirely new system. It has used AI capability to make the agreement process more valuable around the product customers already know. Total revenue was $875.7 million, up 9% year on year, so this is not simply a small AI feature being marketed loudly. The AI layer is becoming a meaningful part of how the company earns recurring revenue.
For owners of mature software, service, or data businesses, the question is practical. Where does AI help customers make better decisions, reduce review time, spot risk, or complete work with fewer handoffs within the service you already provide? The strongest AI pricing opportunities may come from improving a trusted workflow, not launching a separate AI product and hoping customers adopt it.
This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, connecting AI to the operational work and commercial metrics that matter rather than treating it as a standalone experiment.
