The play

Use adversarial scam simulations to test fraud defenses, especially where human-facing systems can be manipulated conversationally.

Apate.AI has raised US$8.15 million in seed funding to build AI agents that engage directly with suspected scammers. These agents impersonate potential victims, hold conversations, and aim to enter fraud networks that are normally hard for banks, platforms, and investigators to see from the outside.

That matters because fraud prevention has mostly been reactive. A customer reports a scam, a bank blocks a transfer, or a platform removes an account after damage is done. The model Apate.AI is pursuing is more active. Instead of waiting for criminals to reveal themselves, software agents can consume scammers’ time, gather signals from their behaviour, and potentially help identify patterns across a wider operation.

The company will keep its engineering team in Sydney but has reincorporated in Delaware to support US expansion. That is becoming a familiar path for ANZ AI firms. The product and technical capability stay local, while the corporate structure moves closer to US investors and customers. For business owners, the lesson is not that every company should redomicile. It is that AI businesses addressing large, global problems can be built locally, but may need international capital and distribution to compete.

Fraud is a clear commercial category for agent-based AI because the cost of manual investigation is high and the volume of attacks keeps growing. This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, where agents are monitored, governed, and tied to clear operational outcomes rather than left to run unchecked.
