Filling open shifts from the casual pool
Texts casual staff who hold the right skills about an open shift, shares hours fairly, and books the first person who says yes.
Talk to Jess at Bellbird Foods
Bellbird Foods is made up. Jess is a real agent, set up the way we would set one up for your team. Talk or type and ask what your staff would ask.

The problem
When someone calls in sick, the supervisor spends the first hour of the shift ringing casuals from a list on their phone. The same few people get every shift, licences aren't checked, and sometimes two people turn up for one spot while another line runs short.
How it works
- Picks up open shifts from the roster as soon as they appear
- Finds casual staff with the skills the shift needs, such as a forklift licence or allergen line induction
- Offers it first to those with the fewest hours that week, and never past the hours and rest limits
- Books the first person to reply yes and updates the roster
- Tells everyone else the shift is filled and tells the supervisor who is coming
What it connects to
- AgentHi Priya, it's Jess from Bellbird Foods. There's an afternoon shift today at Dandenong South, 2pm to 10pm, filling line 2, forklift licence needed. Reply YES if you'd like it.
- Priya (casual operator)YES. Do I need to bring anything?
- AgentIt's yours, Priya. Steel caps and your licence card as usual. Hairnets and coats are at the door. Grace Okafor is the supervisor, so ask for her at the start of the shift.
- Priya (casual operator)Great. Any shifts at Laverton tonight too?
- AgentThere are two night packing shifts at Laverton North, but they need the allergen line induction, which you don't have on record yet. I can ask Leah Morris to book you into the next induction if you'd like.
